at SOJA&CO, we want to give you the best experience with our candles

a little care goes a long way, especially when it comes to candles with wood wicks! follow the tips below to get the most out of your local, eco-friendly and non-toxic candles

before the first use

  • cotton wicks should be cut to 1/4 inch from the wax surface before each use
  • wood wicks should be trimmed 1/8 inch from wax surface before each use
  • place the candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface — out of children's reach, pets, draughts, and flammable materials
  • to light the candle, tilt it slightly and then approach the flame of a lighter or matchstick to the wick for a few seconds. with wood wicks, it is normal to approach the flame a second time — the wood needs to heat up before it catches fire

during the first use

  • it is very important to let the candle burn until the surface is completely melted (this can take 1-2 hours depending on the size). soy wax has a good memory and if your candle is extinguished before allowing a complete melt, all future uses will not exceed the diameter of the so-called "first time".this will create a deep hole in your candle, which will limit its lifespan and cause the wick to go out prematurely
  • do not burn the 2 oz size for more than 2 consecutive hours, as the container can become very hot due to the small size
  • do not burn larger sizes for more than 4 hours at a time (2 to 3 hour cycles are recommended)
  • it is very important to recenter the wick after using the candle (when the wax is still melted) to avoid cracking the glass the next time you use it

for future uses

  • always trim the wick (1/4 inch from the wax surface for cotton wicks and 1/8 inch from the wax surface for wood wicks) before each use — a wick too long as well as too short, can cause premature extinction
  • If there is an accumulation of ashes at the end of the wick, remove them and any bits of matchstick, charred wick, or other debris in the wax before lighting the candle
  • to extinguish the candle, it is recommended to use an appropriate candle snuffer to limit the amount of smoke and the chance of splattering

reusing the containers

  • when about 1/4 inch of wax remains at the bottom of the container, the candle is finished. this remaining wax can be removed by placing the container in the freezer overnight or by pouring boiling water over the cooled wax, allowing it to rise to the surface
  • once the remaining wax is removed, simply hand-wash the container with gentle dishwashing soap and you can use it again and again. here are a few ideas of our own, feel free to share yours with us!

help, my wick is going out fast!

here are a few solutions:

  • a tunnel has been created in the wax: melt the entire surface with a dryer or a match (be careful! the glass will become hot and the wax could splatter) then use a paper towel to absorb the excess, or carve the surface with a round-tipped knife to even it out
  • there is an accumulation of ashes at the end of the wick: remove it before relighting the candle — too much build-up results in a diminished flame
  • the wick is too long or too short: always cut the wick (1/4 inch from the wax surface for cotton wicks and 1/8 inch from the wax surface for wood wicks) before each use — the wrong length can cause premature burnout
